Disciplining the Model
Analog model making was the focus of this project, which culminated in the design of a house and ADU. Residential case studies from 3 time periods (1900s, 1950s, 2000s) were analyzed in order to determine the residence of the future. A grid was derived from the floor plan of a catalog home, and that grid became the generator for development on the site. The site has an existing house, so the grid guided the manipulation of the existing house and the design of the ADU.
A series of models were built, folded, unfolded, and translated into figure ground drawings. The grid serves as a record of traces, such that each iteration carries the baggage of the previous model. The final models are color coded to index the changes throughout the entire project. The thesis of this project is that the house is a diagram, and the future of the house is that it will become more imbued and shaped by context such that it is outright noticeable. The drawings were made with the remaining 3 weeks of the semester and help clarify the making of the project.
